An enigmatic sea turtle obol
Lot 712
WESTERN ASIA MINOR, Uncertain. 5th century BC. Obol (Silver, 9 mm, 0.82 g, 1 h). Sea turtle seen from above. Rev. Dolphin jumping to left within incuse square. CNG E-Auction 452 (2019), 282 var. (with ornaments at sides of turtle, as 'Aegina?'). Roma 4 (2012), 169 var. (dolphin to right, as 'Aegina'). Extremely rare. A few light marks, otherwise, good fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The unusual combination of a sea turtle with a dolphin in an incuse square renders the attribution of this extremely rare issue to Aegina unconvincing. It more likely originates from western Asia Minor or the nearby islands.
